What is the Torch Relay? Before every Olympic Games, the Olympic flame is lit at Olympia, Greece, and carried in a relay to the spectacular opening ceremony at the Games themselves. In the lead up to the start of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing on 8 August, the torch relay will take in 21 international cities and every Chinese province, making it the longest ever. The Torch Relay in LondonOn Sunday 6 April, the Olympic flame was carried across London on its global journey to Beijing for the start of the 2008 Olympic Games. The Torch Relay began at Wembley and followed a route through 10 boroughs, past many of capital’s famous landmarks, to a grand finale at North Greenwich. With the theme of “Journey of Harmony” and the slogan of “Light the Passion, Share the Dream”, the Olympic flame will travel along the historic Silk Road, and visit 21 international cities, including London, on the five inhabited continents from April 2008 onwards. After travelling throughout the mainland of China, a country with 1.3 billion people, and reaching the summit of the world – Mt. Qomolangma (Everest) – the Olympic flame will finally arrive at the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and light the main cauldron on 8 August 2008. The Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay, with the participation of more than 20,000 Torchbearers, lasting 130 days, and over a distance of 137,000 km, will be remembered relay over the longest distance and widest geographical expanse, and involving the largest number of participants in the history of the modern Olympic Movement.
