the International Badminton Federation welcomed a new leader–Korea’s Kang Young Joong–at its Annual General Meeting held in the Chinese capital Beijing a week ago. What changes and surprises will Kang Young Joong, who calls himself as“badminton amateur”, bring to badminton playing-station while it is on the downhill path? There was an interview on this new president yesterday and he let the reporter sense his passion on badminton. Kang said :”The badminton match schedule must be tally with TV broadcasting menu in order to be more popular and gain high audience rating. That is the only way for us to be active in TV screens; therefore, necessary changes are needed.”
Kang told the reporters:”I like badminton very much since I was a little boy and I take myself as badminton amateur. My mother is 84 years old now but she has insisted on playing badminton for 2 hours everyday. She has kept this habit for 30 years without an absent day, no matter it is sunny or rainy. I’m deeply influenced by her and devoted myself to it when I was 16, as time passes by, I am addicted to badminton.”
“Since I have become the president of IBF, I’ve found myself another way to serve for badminton. We’ve got a lot of things ahead and some are emergent, for example, we have to popularize it to undeveloped countries and try hard to cement badminton’s place in Olympic Games, and strive for more sponsors as well……However, the first thing for me is to learn the history of IBF——You could not get something into a better way unless you know what it used to be. At present our primary task is to complete the movement of IBF’s headquarter. And my perspective object is to have something influential done in 2008 Olympics.”
“If we could broad our eyes wider and look further then we can see what badminton really needs is the solution about how to win harmony between matches and managements. As the developments of technology and media’s power, we must inosculate badminton with media more closely to win a bright future.”
In spite of being the new IBF president, Kang Young Joong has never been a badminton player or a coach and he is right about seeing himself as a“badminton amateur”to some extent. However, who can deny that the solid foundation for any kind of sports is built on innumerable fans and amateurs, badminton is the same. Maybe many of them don’t know the rules or technique very well but there is nothing could bar them from loving this game. And this passion is the exact origin of everything wonderful in badminton.
