    Li Ning, former Olympic gymnast for China flys through the air and lights the Olympic Flame during the Opening Ceremony for the Beijing 2008 Games.

    The Beijing 2008 Olympic Games got off to a spectacular start with a stunning Opening Ceremony at the Bird's Nest stadium. 

    The ceremony included a unique mixture of new technology and performance on a massive scale.

    London 2012 Organising Committee Chief Executive Paul Deighton attended the event and commented:

    'Everyone expected an Opening Ceremony of epic proportion and China did not disappoint, including a most spectacular finale.

    'We now look forward to 16 days of sport, and, for us, 16 days of learning as we prepare for the the next Summer Games in London.

    He also wished the best of luck to Team GB.

    The Beijing 2008 Olympic Games got off to a spectacular start with a stunning Opening Ceremony at the Bird's Nest stadium. It was amazing to watch. It used the latest technology.
