Lovely Complex (Love Com) is an adaptation of the best-selling Japanese manga Love Complex; so you can expect a simple film filled with cute teenagers that talk like chipmunks, with eyes that are held open as wide as possible, and set in a world with colours that seem inspired by The Wizard of Oz.
The movie’s storyline isn’t very complicated and is utterly predictable: Risa (Ema Fujisawa), a tall Japanese girl, gets rejected by a boy because she is taller than him. Otani (Teppei Koike), a short Japanese guy, gets rejected by a girl because he is shorter than her. Obviously these two would make the oddest of couples and would never be a good match for each other. Well, love doesn’t always follow such logic as Lovely Complex shows.
Watching the first half of Lovely Complex is fun and at times quite funny before the 170-cm girl confesses to the 159-cm boy who thought she was merely joking. Then it fell into a repetitive rut, with scenes of “Said I don’t love you, but I lied,” while there really wasn’t a doubt that the couple would ever get together.
Another problem with the movie is that audiences unfamiliar with the Japanese culture may find it hard to get used to the ultra cuteness that gets more grating as the movie rolls on. Nevertheless, it’s still a pleasant experience to watch a “clean” and cute teen movie different from American Pie or Legally Blonde.
