Competition Format
The total number of matches for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Volleyball
competition will be 76, comprising 38 for men and 38 for women. The competition
for both men and women will consist of four phases: preliminary round,
quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals.
1. Competition System
(1) Preliminary Round
Two (2) pools (A and B) will be formed, composed of six (6) teams each. The
format is single round robin, where every team will playwith the five other
teams in their pool.
(2) Quarterfinals
The first four (4) teams in each preliminary pool will advance to
quarterfinals, eight teams in total. The format will be as follows:A1 vs.
B4A2/A3 vs. B2/B3 (FIVB will draw the matches.)A4 vs. B1
(3) Semifinals
The four (4) winners of the quarterfinals will then advance to the
semifinals. The format will be as follows: Winner A1/B4 vs. Winner (A2/A3 vs.
B2/B3, subject to draw) Winner (A2/A3 vs. B2/B3, subject to draw) vs. Winner
A4/B1
(4) Finals
Two (2) winners of the semifinals will play the gold medal match to determine
the gold and silver medals.Two (2) losers of the semifinals will play the bronze
medal match to determine the bronze medal and the fourth place.
2. Drawing of lots
Teams will be allocated to one (1) of the two (2) preliminary round pools via
a drawing of lots, in accordance with the competition regulations of FIVB. After
the end of the preliminary round, the FIVB will draw the matches A2/A3 vs. B2/B3
and set the match order for the quarterfinal matches.
3. Meetings
The Preliminary Inquiry will take place at the Olympic Village or the main
competition hall (CAS) on August 6 or 7, 2008 (date and location to be
confirmed). The General Technical Meeting will take place on August 8, 2008 and
at a location to be confirmed.The team manager, team coach, team doctor and
interpreter must be present at the Preliminary Inquiry and the General Technical
Meeting.
